One of the things I had noticed on trackdays was how much time I was spending looking at the rev counter. When I could hear the engine revs getting high I would look at the rev counter until it was time to change gear, thsi obviously was taking my attention away from the traffic adn the lines through the corners. I decided that it would be beneficial to fit a shift light for two reasons, firstly to remove the necessity to look at the rev counter and secondly to protect the engine from overreving.
Fitting Instructions
Remove windscreen, either partially or fully to permit access to drill holes and rivet mounting bracket for light module.
Remove the rev counter from the instrument panel by undoing the two knurled nuts on the back and sliding the rev counter forward.
Position bracket over the rev counter and drill holes for the pop rivets which hold the bracket in place. Ensure that the bracket is close enough to the windscreen so that the tonneau can still be fitted without removing the shiftlight, but not so close to the windscreen that the unit hits the windscreen.
Drill a hole in the scuttle just in front of the right hand end of the bracket for the cable and connector to fit through. This hole will be filled by the grommet which comes pre fitted on the cable.
Find a suitable place to locate the control box so that the LCD screen can be seen adn the buttons accessed for setting up the unit and reading the parameters later. I decided to place the control box on top of the pedal box in the engine bay since it was about the right size and it was easy to read with the bonnet off. In light of the fact that the pedal box sits under one of the bonnet louvres I decided to house the control box (which is not fully waterproof) inside a plastic tupperware box which I bought from Woolworths for about £1.70.
Connect the wiring as per the fitting instructions. I took the live feed from the live side of the heated windscreen switch.
I found the only way to get a reliable connection was with crimped connections using piggyback spade connections. I initially tried Scotchlock connectors but got intermittant tacho readings.
Test the unit by setting the shift point at 3000 RPM and the first light at 2000 RPM and the shift down point at 1500 RPM. Once you're happy that the lights come on at the right revs then set the shift limits to the required positions for your engine.
