Modifications

This page covers the changes that I've made to Will Fly since I've built her.

Apollo Tank

One of the problems with K series engines is they are very prone to oil surge when used on track. To help prevent air reaching the main bearings I fitted an Apollo Tank which separates the air from the oil before feeding it back to the engine.

Oil/Water Intercooler

Another problem with K series engines is that because they retain a certain amount of oil in the head, they need to have the oil level set with the engine running. This causes a slight problem when the oil level is topped right up, which help with surge protection but causes the oil temperature to rise due to windage of the oil by the crank. i.e. The bottom of the crank is sitting in the oil and when it goes round it thrashes the oil and introduces more heat. To reduce this heat I have added an oil/water intercooler, called a Laminova, which is made by think Automotive in Isleworth.

Engine Mods

Over the Winter I plan to upgrade the engine, by fitting Jenvey direct to heat (DTH) throttle bodies, uprated cams and a modified head with bigger valves ported by Dave Andrews.

Limited Slip Diff

One of my winter projects is to change the diff ratio from 3.92 to 3.62 which will give me lower revs for a give speed which will make the car more enjoyable when touring. I also have also fitted a Quaife ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing) Limited Slip Diff unit.

ACES Sureshift 2 shift light

In order to help time gearchanges better on trackdays and to prevent overreving the engine once the engine mods are done, I decided to fit a shift light. I chose the ACES Sureshift 2 in the end over the Omex as this unit is similar to that fitted to the R500.

4-2-1 Custom Exhaust

In order to maximise the effectiveness of the engine mods, it was necessary to replace the standard Caterham 4-1 short primary exhaust with a custom 4-2-1 exhaust.

Tyre Information

Since owning WILL FLY I have progressed from using the standard fit Avon ZV1s to using 14" Yokohama A032Rs on the road and 13" Avon ACB10s for trackdays. Follow the link above for more tyre info.

Starter Button

All good race cars have a big red starter button instead of an ignition key, mine is no exception.
